A Response to Recent Events
In this unique time of COVID-19, when we find ourselves apart, we are finding that, now more than ever, there is an urgency to come together. The recent world and national events have highlighted many inequities, bias and views of racism throughout all society, our community included.
As a school district we are here to support our students and families. We will continue to work with students and our schools to address areas where we can engage, educate and empower our students. We recognize that the media coverage of recent rallies, events and protests have presented graphic images that may be difficult to contextualize. Children, as well as many adults, naturally have questions about these events. There are no clear answers to many of these questions. We encourage families to utilize the resources listed below to start conversations and develop meaningful questions.
We stand with our students and families of color. We are listening to their concerns, questions, and perspectives and we want to reassure them that we are committed to making changes in our system that ensure their safety and wellbeing.

Information Regarding School Notification System - SwiftK12
Wallenpaupack Area SD has recently expanded the use of its notification system to include SMS/Text messages as well as automated phone calls. Additional information regarding setting up and configuring your account through the Parent Portal can be found in this document.
**Due to the Governor's jurisdiction, Pre-Employment Transition Services (PETS) through OVR are temporarily on pause.**
Students with an IEP, 504 plan, or who self-identify as having a disability, are encouraged to participate in Pre-Employment Transition Services with OVR. Pre-Employment Transition Services provide education and training in the areas of Job Exploration, Workplace Readiness, Work Based Learning Experience, Self-Advocacy and Post-Secondary Education to students with disabilities from age 14-21. Currently, these services are on pause due to the Governor's jurisdiction. If your child has an open case with OVR, their OVR counselor is able to continue providing counseling & guidance, and resources & supports to customers. Your child's OVR counselor will be reaching out to touch base in the near future.
OVR is able to discuss starting services with any interested individuals and process new applications. To get started, click on the OVR-Pre-Application instructions. As we know, we're in an unprecedented time for everyone. It's uncertain and very scary. This fear is completely understandable, and the indefinite timeline is likely creating a lot of anxiety during a time where we may be or feel more removed from our support networks. But social distancing doesn't have to mean social isolation, and we want people to know that even as we all face this difficult period, no one is alone.
On April 1st, a new resource became available to the citizens of PA. A 24/7 mental health and crisis support line for people dealing with anxiety or other difficult emotions became available. Callers will be able to speak with staff who are trained in trauma-informed principles and will listen, assess the person's needs, triage, and refer to other local supports and professionals as needed.
The Mental Health Support Line can be reached toll-free, 24/7 at 1-855-284-2494 from anywhere in PA.
It's a difficult time, and it's easy to feel alone and cut-off from the world, but we need people to know that they are not alone, and support is available. Please help share the word about this resource.
WAMS Students Darby Brennan and Christopher Simon Win 2nd Place in Entrepreneurship Challenge Statewide
Mrs. Argyro Paspalas' seventh grade students, Darby Brennan and Christopher Simon, participated in the 2020 Entrepreneurship Challente at the local level, winning the Middle School Division with their team's business plan, Vently Inc. They qualified to compete at the state level.
They were given the opportunity to prepare their elevator pitch for their team's business plan. Darby and Christopher won Second Place in the Pennsylvania Council on Financial Literacy Entrepreneurship Challenge Statewide - Middle School Division. PennCFL has presented certificates and prizes to the winners via email.
First National Bank and ProAct LTD made this opportunity possible. Thank you to Mr. Sam Ryder, Mr. Bill Joseph and Mr. Allan Darr, leaders of these great organizations, for their commitment to the students in PA. Their long-lasting investment in students has paid off with the explosion of participation statewide.
Team PennCFL's mission is to provide Pennsylvania's K-12 students with economics, personal finance, and entrepreneurship skills that elevate their standard of living, quality of life, and professional success. The team PennCFL members are Carolyn Shirk, Alan Dakey, Jennifer Henderson, and Donna Gavitt.

Performing Arts Gala Awards 2020
The WAHS Performing Arts faculty invite you to join us for the 2020 Performing Arts Gala and Awards. We will be celebrating the achievements of our performing arts students throughout the year, and recognizing our seniors with plaques, certificates, and scholarships. The program will be presented on Friday, May 29 at 7:00 pm, and will appear below. You may need to refresh the webpage for it to appear.
Fine Arts Students of the Month for June are Olivia Torres and Gibson Warner
Olivia Torres, of Greentown, is being recognized for her work in the Fine Arts discipline of Music. Olivia has been a member of the Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and Show Choir. She served as a Percussion Section Leader this year. Olivia plans to attend Penn State Scranton to major in Psychology with a minor in Music.
Gibson Warner, of Greentown, is being recognized for his work in the Fine Arts disciplines of Music and Drama. Gibson has been a member of the Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Show Choir, and WAHS Players. He is also a High Honor Roll student, a member of the National Honor Society, and attended the 2018 PA Thespian Conference. He plans to attend a conservatory for Musical Theater, and to pursue a career as a Broadway performer.
Senior Seth Brown Wins National Award for Leadership and Volunteerism
The National WWII Museum in New Orleans has named local student Seth Brown '20 of Wallenpaupack Area High School as a 2020 Billy Michal Student Leadership Award recipient. The national honor is awarded annually to one student in every state who has maintained a strong record of volunteerism, demonstrates school and community activism, and helps implement creative solutions to recognized problems. Each honoree will be flown to New Orleans to participate in the Museum's American Spirit Awards program taking place June 11-12.
The leadership award, which the Museum first presented in 2017, was created in honor of Billy Michal, who was a child living in Louisiana during World War II. At only six years old, Michal helped his one-room school win a statewide scrap metal-collection contest during the war, proving that every citizen could contribute to victory. Michal's achievement demonstrated the positive impact the American spirit could have on the Home Front war efforts, and he continues to inspire students across America today.
"It's extremely gratifying to recognize students throughout the nation for the wonderful contributions they make to their local communities," said Stephen J. Watson, President & CEO at The National WWII Museum. "During World War II, our country needed everyone to come together for a common goal of securing freedom and democracy around the world. Much like Billy Michal's contribution over 75 years ago, our student honorees prove that their positive actions, no matter how big or small, can make a difference in their communities. We are proud to honor their accomplishments."
In his role as student, athlete, leader, friend, and mentor, Brown '20 has inspired members of the Wallenpaupack Area school community to create a more inclusive, engaged, and kind student body. Most recently, his conviction and passion for cultivating unity was evidenced when for the first time in the school district's history, Brown organized and led his officer team in facilitating a K-12 school-wide traveling pep rally for more than 4,000 students and staff. Words cannot adequately express how highly regarded Brown is among students and staff nor can they fully capture his potential as a dynamic change agent.
The National WWII Museum's American Spirit Awards - presented by Hancock Whitney - is as multiday event consisting of a patron reception, premier gala, and awards luncheon and leadership forum, which is where the Billy Michal students will receive their awards. In addition to the Billy Michal winners, the recipients of the Museum's American Spirit Award, American Spirit Medallion and Silver Service Medallion will be honored throughout the event. The 2020 American Spirit Award honorees include World War II veteran Richard Duchossois and world-renowned presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Proceeds from the American Spirit Awards will support educational programming at The National WWII Museum, including the ongoing development of classroom materials and professional development opportunities for teachers in schools across the country, as well as online experiences that bring the Museum and its resources to students around the world.

Safe2Say Something (S2SS) Program Under Way
In 2018, the General Assembly passed Act 44 mandating the establishment and use of the "Safe2Say Something" (S2SS) anonymous reporting system by every Pennsylvania school entity by January 14, 2019.
S2SS is a life-saving and life-changing school safety program that teaches students, educators, and administrators how: (1) to recognize the signs and signals of individuals who may be at risk of hurting themselves or others, and (2) to anonymously report this information through the S2SS app, website, or 24/7 Crisis Center Hotline.

Notice Regarding Student Insurance - Revised for 2019-2020 School Year
Please be advised that it is the responsibility of the parents/guardians, in the event of a student accident, to provide for accidental injury expenses either through insurance or cash payment to health care providers. For this reason, the School District would like to make you aware of the availability of a low cost, standard school approved insurance policy.
The School District does not provide insurance coverage for students. If you do not have insurance or the financial ability to cover potential injury expenses, we encourage you to review this Student Accident Insurance document.
If you choose to purchase insurance through this program, please have your child return the completed insurance form with your payment to their school and it will be forwarded to the insurance company to process.
We hope this program can be a valuable service for you and your family.
Vaccination Requirements for 2018-2019 School Year Onward
In the 2018-2019 school year, there are requirements that students in 7th and 12th grade must adhere to. On the First Day of School in the fall of 2018, unless the child has a medical or religious/philosophical exemption, a child must have had the vaccinations as described in this pamphlet, or risk exclusion from school.
Students at any grade, Kindergarten through 12th, including all public, private, parochial or nonpublic school in this Commonwealth of Pennsylvania must show proof of immunization before they can attend school. This pertains to vocational schools, alternative education programs, intermediate units, special education, home education programs, charter and cyber charter schools.
