WAMS National Junior Honor Society Chapter Has a Great Year

The Wallenpaupack Area National Junior Honor Society wrapped a busy year of service and community involvement. Chapter members collectively provided more than 1,000 individual service hours since the summer of 2018. Members volunteered at food pantries, fire companies, animal shelters, senior centers, the Holiday Toy Drive, churches, community sporting events, and Scouts to name a few. Within the school community they served as peer tutors, mentors, library assistants, Reading Buddies, and service project organizers.

The NJHS Induction ceremony was held on Thursday, May 31, with the addition of 68 new members:

This was Ms. Lauren Tenbus's first year as NJHS chapter adviser. It has been an exciting year with many great ideas, such as, extending Reading Buddies (a cooperative program with the North Primary school to assist young children with their developing reading skills), to the North Intermediate School, and adding Homework Helpers there as well. NJHS also formed many more committees such as Operation Gratitude which collected over 800 pieces of donations for troops overseas. They also Pied Teachers in the Face to help the California Wildfire Victims. They started up a fundraiser for families harmed by hurricanes Michael and Florence, collected three large boxes of donations for the Dessin Animal Shelter, and assisted with creating two boxes for the Box of Balloons Program, which helps underprivileged families create birthday parties in a box for their children.

Attention Parents/Guardians: Peanut Allergies

This year we welcome several students to our school with allergies to peanuts and/or other nuts. We invite your help and cooperation to help them stay safe.

Reactions range from mild to life threatening. Any exposure to peanuts or nuts may cause an allergic reaction that requires emergency medical treatment. To reduce the chance of this occurring, we are asking that you do not send any peanut- or nut-containing products to school with your child that will be eaten in the classroom.

Children may eat what they like in the cafeteria, where a table is available for students with food allergies.

We look forward to working together with you to have a wonderful year. If you have any questions, please call Mary Ellen Olsheski, School Nurse, at (570) 226‑4557 ext. 3060.

Sincerely,

Mary Ellen Olsheski
Nurse
