As we know, we're in an unprecedented time for everyone. It's uncertain and very scary. This fear is completely understandable, and the indefinite timeline is likely creating a lot of anxiety during a time where we may be or feel more removed from our support networks. But social distancing doesn't have to mean social isolation, and we want people to know that even as we all face this difficult period, no one is alone.

On April 1st, a new resource became available to the citizens of PA. A 24/7 mental health and crisis support line for people dealing with anxiety or other difficult emotions became available. Callers will be able to speak with staff who are trained in trauma-informed principles and will listen, assess the person's needs, triage, and refer to other local supports and professionals as needed.

The Mental Health Support Line can be reached toll-free, 24/7 at 1-855-284-2494 from anywhere in PA.

It's a difficult time, and it's easy to feel alone and cut-off from the world, but we need people to know that they are not alone, and support is available. Please help share the word about this resource.

Wallenpaupack Area School District will begin offering a free grab and go breakfast and lunch program FOR ALL STUDENTS, beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020 between 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. The student(s) will need to be present for the pickup of meals. Students can pick up breakfast and lunch at the following locations:

  • Wallenpaupack High School (gym foyer - Door 25)
  • Wallenpaupack South Elementary (Cafeteria - door by parking lot)
  • Blooming Grove Baptist Church, 550 Route 402, Blooming Grove
  • Central Fire Station, 574 Westcolang Road, Hawley.

Kindergarten Registration Has Begun!

Attention parents of all Wallenpaupack Area School District children who will be five years of age on or before August 31, 2020 and will be attending Kindergarten during the 2020-2021 school year: Please refer to this page for registration instructions and to download the registration forms or request a registration packet from the Central Registrar's office by calling (570) 226-4557 ext. 3036.

The registration period runs from February 3rd through April 30th.

Senior Seth Brown Wins National Award for Leadership and Volunteerism

The National WWII Museum in New Orleans has named local student Seth Brown '20 of Wallenpaupack Area High School as a 2020 Billy Michal Student Leadership Award recipient. The national honor is awarded annually to one student in every state who has maintained a strong record of volunteerism, demonstrates school and community activism, and helps implement creative solutions to recognized problems. Each honoree will be flown to New Orleans to participate in the Museum's American Spirit Awards program taking place June 11-12.

The leadership award, which the Museum first presented in 2017, was created in honor of Billy Michal, who was a child living in Louisiana during World War II. At only six years old, Michal helped his one-room school win a statewide scrap metal-collection contest during the war, proving that every citizen could contribute to victory. Michal's achievement demonstrated the positive impact the American spirit could have on the Home Front war efforts, and he continues to inspire students across America today.

"It's extremely gratifying to recognize students throughout the nation for the wonderful contributions they make to their local communities," said Stephen J. Watson, President & CEO at The National WWII Museum. "During World War II, our country needed everyone to come together for a common goal of securing freedom and democracy around the world. Much like Billy Michal's contribution over 75 years ago, our student honorees prove that their positive actions, no matter how big or small, can make a difference in their communities. We are proud to honor their accomplishments."

In his role as student, athlete, leader, friend, and mentor, Brown '20 has inspired members of the Wallenpaupack Area school community to create a more inclusive, engaged, and kind student body. Most recently, his conviction and passion for cultivating unity was evidenced when for the first time in the school district's history, Brown organized and led his officer team in facilitating a K-12 school-wide traveling pep rally for more than 4,000 students and staff. Words cannot adequately express how highly regarded Brown is among students and staff nor can they fully capture his potential as a dynamic change agent.

The National WWII Museum's American Spirit Awards - presented by Hancock Whitney - is as multiday event consisting of a patron reception, premier gala, and awards luncheon and leadership forum, which is where the Billy Michal students will receive their awards. In addition to the Billy Michal winners, the recipients of the Museum's American Spirit Award, American Spirit Medallion and Silver Service Medallion will be honored throughout the event. The 2020 American Spirit Award honorees include World War II veteran Richard Duchossois and world-renowned presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Proceeds from the American Spirit Awards will support educational programming at The National WWII Museum, including the ongoing development of classroom materials and professional development opportunities for teachers in schools across the country, as well as online experiences that bring the Museum and its resources to students around the world.

Senior Kaiden Quigley Honored at March School Board Meeting

The Wallenpaupack School Board continued its tradition of spotlighting outstanding seniors at their monthly meeting. This month, Kaiden Quigley was the recipient of that honor.

Kaiden is a Gold Award-winning member of the National Honor Society, as well as a member of its Executive Council. She has served as Student Central Treasurer, a Student Ambassador, and as a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), the Athletic Council and the Student Council, serving as its Treasurer. She participated in the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Program, and represented the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) group at the State Competition, and as its President. She also took Second Place in the Health Knowledge Bowl as a member of Skills USA. Kaiden earned her athletic letters in Field Hockey and Basketball, and also served as Captain of the Basketball Team.

The School Board, faculty, and staff of the Wallenpaupack community wish Kaiden continued success with all her future plans.

WAHS Childcare CTE Students Visit Northampton Community College

WAHS Childcare CTE students visited Northampton Community College, Monroe Campus, on March 6, 2020. Students toured the campus, observed children in the early childhood classes, and met with current interns in the Early Childhood Education Program. During a meet and greet session, Northampton students said Wallenpaupack CTE students seemed well-prepared for post-secondary education in terms of their knowledge base and interpersonal skills. Kate Curry, Early Childhood Education Program Director, encouraged students to be a change agent and strive to be like a teacher they admire.

When students were asked to describe qualities of a great teacher, they said they pictured their instructor, Mrs. Melissa Geisheimer, and described her as being kind, supportive, and nurturing. Camille Sealey-Otero Dougherty said, "The maker space lab (i.e. utilized for crafting wood projects for students, creating toys or puzzles with a 3-D printer, or designing t-shirts for instructional activities) was a great opportunity to develop hands-on activities to improve the learning experience." Shianne Johnson stated "I liked the way Northampton students intertwined reading with hands on activities to engage students in learning." Kaitlyn Shelley said, "I appreciated how the program at Northampton encouraged a creative way of teaching to improve student learning."

WAHS Seniors Job Shadow at Teeters' Funeral Chapel

Shae Harrell '20 and Will Olver '20 shadowed Mrs. Julie Teeter-Seiler, Funeral Director at Teeters' Funeral Chapel (and Wallenpaupack alumna) in Hawley.

Harrell said, "It was interesting to see behind the scenes and witness everything that goes into the work of a Funeral Director, including working with a grieving family, consulting about the financial issues involved in a funeral, and completing necessary paperwork." Harrell is planning on becoming a Funeral Director and has filled her schedule with science, marketing and psychology classes so she has a good foundation to enter a Mortuary Science Program.

Olver said, "The job shadow helped me focus on career goals, since now I know what a Funeral Director does." Julie Teeter-Seiler shared, "There are many aspects of running a funeral home including counseling families, managing the business end of the process, embalming techniques and restorative art." She encouraged both students to learn more about the field and see where their interests lie.

Mrs. Melissa Regenski, Transition Coordinator and Mrs. Susan Sullum, Career Counselor coordinated the job shadow experience.

Exercise Science/Sports Medicine CTE Attends Aquatic Therapy Workshop

Twelve students from the WAHS Exercise Science/Sports Medicine CTE Program participated in an aquatic therapy workshop at St. Joseph's Center in Scranton on February 28, 2020.

Michael Kane, Director of Physical Therapy, shared the benefits of providing aquatic therapy including muscle strengthening and relaxation and improving balance and stability. Students gained firsthand knowledge of techniques used by the physical therapists at St. Joseph's Center by exercising with therapists and clients in the pool. Mrs. Laura Ragonese, Coordinator of the Exercise Science/Sports Medicine Program, arranged the workshop at St. Joseph's Center to expand students' knowledge of the multiple types of treatment available in the Exercise Science field.

Students were accompanied to St. Joseph's Center by Mrs. Laura Ragonese, Coordinator of the Exercise Science/Sports Medicine Program and Mrs. Susan Sullum, Career Counselor.

WAHS Students Make All-State Choir

Congratulations to Lauren Brand, Lydia Freethy, Tim Krawcyk and David Manassy on qualifying for PMEA All-State Choir!

Culinary Arts Team Takes 3rd at Wings and Chili Competition

Chef Cheryl Lewis and her Culinary Arts team won the 3rd place trophy at the Wings and Chili Competition at Silver Birches on Sunday. Jack Filip, Sam Filip, John Rositto, and Anthony Mauro did a fantastic job, along with the entire 11th grade Culinary Arts class who helped prep for the event. They all worked as a team to compete against professional chefs from all over the area. Congratulations for a job well done!

WAHS Students Participate in Crime Scene Reenactment

70 WAHS students participated in a crime scene reenactment workshop presented by the Pennsylvania State Police. Trooper 1st Class Robert Urban, Communications Services Officer, and Trooper 1st Class James Hitchcock, Forensic Services Unit, described how evidence is collected and analyzed at a crime scene. Trooper Hitchcock indicated he has been involved in over 1000 death investigations during his career in the Lackawanna, Pike, Susquehanna, and Wayne County Regions. Hitchcock explained a variety of investigative techniques for solving a crime including lifting fingerprints, shoe tracks, and tire marks, as well as collecting DNA from blood samples, cigarettes, or other household items, and analyzing bullet casings.

Seth Brown '20 found the presentation very interesting, since he learned about what goes into a case investigation and how collecting evidence is critical in a crime scene investigation because one slip up could void a case. Brown said he is interested in pursuing a career in Civil Rights Law and this information could be very helpful if he is involved in a defense investigation. Ashley Torres '20 thought the workshop was very informative since a real-life investigation is very different from crime scene investigations on TV. Torres' plans include pursuing a career in Risk Management/Analysis. She stated Law Enforcement is a high-risk job, and she gained insights in how to do things in the safest manner to maintain the safety of the Officers.

The Crime Scene Reenactment Presentation was coordinated by Mr. John Clader, Director of School Security, and Mrs. Susan Sullum, Career Counselor.

Girls Basketball Team Wins Sportsmanship Award

The Scranton Chapter of PIAA Basketball Officials voted the honor of the Sportsmanship Award for the 2019-2020 season to the Wallenpaupack Area Girls' Basketball Team. Congratulations Team!

Pennsylvania State Troopers Visit WAHS Classroom

WAHS students welcomed PSP Trooper Robert Urban and Trooper James Hitchcock to their classroom on February 25th during a visit to the High School. Students enjoyed meeting the troopers and learning about what they do to help individuals in the community. Students demonstrated some of their skills in the classroom, including engaging in a "dance off" with the State Troopers. To show their appreciation, the Troopers provided a souvenir helmet and badge to students in Mr. Alex Curtin's Classroom. Mr. Curtin shared the visit was a great opportunity for learning about one another's talents.

David Manassy is the March Fine Arts Student of the Month

David Manassy, of Hawley, is being recognized for his work in the Fine Arts discipline of Music. David has been a member of the Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, Show Choir, Chamber Choir, Guitar Club, and Yearbook Club. He has served as a flute Section Leader for Marching Band for one year, and has also performed with the PMEA District, Region, and All State Choirs. He plans to attend a 4-year college to major in music production.

Junior Leadership Team Attends Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice Day

The WAHS Junior Leadership Team attended a session on Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice on February 11, 2020 at the Wayne County Courthouse. Students met with members of the Wayne County District Attorney's Office, PA State Police, Wayne County Drug Task Force, Wayne County Commissioners, and K-9 Unit. Junior Leadership members expressed their gratitude to Assistant District Attorney Brendan Ellis for developing the list of speakers for the day. In addition, the Team toured the Wayne County Correctional Facility.

Peter Macdonough '21 shared "I learned how the jail works - how they keep it clean, quiet, and orderly." Emily Langan '21 stated, "I loved listening to the attorneys and learning about what their day consists of." Camille Sealey-Otero Dougherty '21 indicated, "We learned about what PSP troopers do and how they help children and adults going through hard times." Nathan Kryzan '21 added, "This helped to improve my leadership skills by showing me how important communication is in the work force." Zach Witte '21 indicated "We learned about some of the things our hard-working State Troopers had to go through to become State Troopers, and we also learned how many different factors go into keeping Wayne County a safe community."

Junior Leadership attends monthly informational sessions in Wayne County. Students are accompanied by WAHS College & Career Counselors on a rotating basis including Mrs. Melissa Monte, Ms. Amanda Rosemergy, and Mrs. Susan Sullum.

WAHS and WAMS Students Win Penn CFL Entrepreneurship Challenge

The Pennsylvania Council on Financial Literacy (PennCFL) is honored to announce the following winners from the Entrepreneurship Challenge, a student conference and competition hosted by Pennsylvania College of Technology. Each winning team will share $100 in prizes.

Under the leadership of teacher Mrs. Colleen Connors, Wallenpaupack Area High School had a business plan team chosen as winners, which includes Alec Crouthamel and Maxwell Olsson. Additionally, an honorable mention team was chosen, which includes Sophie Ryan, Zoe Badner, and McKenna McShane.

Under the leadership of teacher Mrs. Argyro Paspalas, Wallenpaupack Area Middle School had a business plan team chosen as winners, which includes Darby Brennan and Christopher Simon.

WAHS Juniors Shadow Salon Staff at Renee's Hair Studio in Hawley

Karter Rowell '21 and Kaitlyn Shelley '21, observed professionals in the cosmetology industry at Renee's Hair Studio in Hawley on February 19th. Students toured the salon to become familiar with the many different services including hair-cutting, coloring and styling, manicure and pedicure, and eyelash extensions. Students shadowed Ms. Scout Edwards '13 and Ms. Laura Grayek and discussed the importance of good communication with clients, continuing education to learn about new products and techniques, and being familiar with different types of job opportunities in the cosmetology industry.

Renee Rosser, owner of the salon, shared that students need to focus on a strong work ethic, be willing to work flexible hours that are in demand, and carry out a wide range of responsibilities at a salon. The students who previously toured Empire Beauty School in Moosic, stated they enjoyed their job shadow experience, especially the "homey" atmosphere at Renee's. They found the staff friendly and easy to talk to and were impressed by the stylists' passion for their work and their dedication to their clients. Students were escorted to the salon by Mrs. Susan Sullum, Career Counselor.

Little League Continues Challenger Division for Children with Disabilities

Has your son or daughter expressed interest in playing organized baseball only to be prevented from doing so by a physical or mental disability? Do you want him or her to give our national pastime a try? Then Little League's Challenger Division might just be for you. Established in 1989, Challenger Division gives developmentally and physically challenged boys and girls the opportunity to enjoy the full benefits of participation in a Little League program structured to their abilities. Playing with the same uniforms and equipment on the same fields, participants have the opportunity to experience the joys of pulling together as a team, being cheered, earning awards for their achievements, and learning about the game of baseball, maybe even becoming a fan.

Challenger Division accommodates girls and boys ages 5-22 (if still enrolled in high school) and is designed for those who would otherwise not have the opportunity to play in an organized baseball league. Students from any school district are equally welcome.

Safe2Say Something (S2SS) Program Under Way

In 2018, the General Assembly passed Act 44 mandating the establishment and use of the "Safe2Say Something" (S2SS) anonymous reporting system by every Pennsylvania school entity by January 14, 2019.

S2SS is a life-saving and life-changing school safety program that teaches students, educators, and administrators how: (1) to recognize the signs and signals of individuals who may be at risk of hurting themselves or others, and (2) to anonymously report this information through the S2SS app, website, or 24/7 Crisis Center Hotline.

Notice Regarding Student Insurance - Revised for 2019-2020 School Year

Please be advised that it is the responsibility of the parents/guardians, in the event of a student accident, to provide for accidental injury expenses either through insurance or cash payment to health care providers. For this reason, the School District would like to make you aware of the availability of a low cost, standard school approved insurance policy.

The School District does not provide insurance coverage for students. If you do not have insurance or the financial ability to cover potential injury expenses, we encourage you to review this Student Accident Insurance document.

If you choose to purchase insurance through this program, please have your child return the completed insurance form with your payment to their school and it will be forwarded to the insurance company to process.

We hope this program can be a valuable service for you and your family.

Vaccination Requirements for 2018-2019 School Year Onward

In the 2018-2019 school year, there are requirements that students in 7th and 12th grade must adhere to. On the First Day of School in the fall of 2018, unless the child has a medical or religious/philosophical exemption, a child must have had the vaccinations as described in this pamphlet, or risk exclusion from school. Students at any grade, Kindergarten through 12th, including all public, private, parochial or nonpublic school in this Commonwealth of Pennsylvania must show proof of immunization before they can attend school. This pertains to vocational schools, alternative education programs, intermediate units, special education, home education programs, charter and cyber charter schools.
