Wallenpaupack Area NJHS "Reading Buddies" Program Meets with Success

The Wallenpaupack Area National Junior Honor Society initiated a "reading buddies" program in March as a new service learning activity that helps to support reading stamina and make reading fun. Under the guidance of Mrs. Beth Troop, this program was conceived by a NJHS service project committee earlier in the school year. NJHS members pair up with first and second graders to help the younger students practice their reading in small-group or one-on-one settings. North Primary students may also read their writing projects to their buddies and correct spelling errors in the process, each time building confidence and knowledge.

After more than two months, thisprogram "has turned into something the kids look forward to," said Title I Reading Specialist Emily Babyak, who meets the NJHS students each week when they arrive at the primary school.

As the school year comes to an end, seventh-grade NJHS inductees have joined the current members to learn about the program and be ready to continue it next school year
